I offer a range of editorial services, including those detailed below. The list is not exhaustive so please contact me to discuss and agree any aspect of your project before work commences. Don’t worry too much about whether you think you need me to proofread, proof-edit or copy-edit your document, this can be agreed between us. If you decide you would like me to work on your document, I will send you a copy of my terms and conditions. You will need to agree to these in writing before I can proceed. We will also need to agree a brief for the work. You may have a brief prepared or we can discuss your requirements. The brief will need to be agreed between us prior to work starting. I am happy to provide you with a copy of my terms and conditions, along with a sample brief, before you commission any work. I am also happy to work on a short sample of your document for free.
I have over fifteen years’ experience in editing, and projects include government documents, doctorates and journal articles. I am a Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) and have undertaken training with the Publishing Training Centre (PTC).
Proofreading essentially entails checking the final stage of any document before it is published. It can be undertaken on hard copy or digitally (usually in Word or as a PDF). If you would like me to proofread your document, I will check for errors e.g. in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. When proofreading, it is expected that only actual errors will be amended. I am happy to proofread against copy or proofread blind.
My hourly rate for proofreading is £20. Discounts are available for large projects and for regular work.
In addition to the corrections made when proofreading, you may also wish me to look at other aspects of your document without going into as much detail as I would for copy-editing. This could include querying any obvious formatting or content errors – the exact nature of the work would be agreed in advance.
My hourly rate for proof-editing is £25. Discounts are available for large projects and for regular work.
One of my areas of specialism is academic proofreading, and copy-editing. I have completed a Masters degree myself and understand the time and effort it takes to get it right. Commissioning me to check your work will put the final polish on the submitted document and reduce the instances of unnecessary errors which examiners may pick up.
For academic proofreading, my rates are £10 per 1,000 words up to 50,000 words, and £9.00 per 1,000 words thereafter. For academic copy-editing, my rates are £12 per 1,000 words up to 50,000 words, and £11.00 per 1,000 words thereafter.
The exact nature of the work will depend upon the brief but when copy-editing a document, I will initially check that the copy is complete. I will then correct errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar (as with proofreading). In addition, I will ensure that the content and structure of the document flows logically, the writing style is appropriate for the intended reader, formatting and positioning of tables/illustrations is correct, any links work etc. I will query any doubtful facts and make suggestions regarding corrections and re-wording. When copy-editing your document, I am essentially looking at the ‘whole picture’. Once I have finished copy-editing, you will have a document that is clear, correct, coherent, complete, concise and credible – the seven Cs of editing!
My hourly rate for copy-editing is £30. Discounts are available for large projects and for regular work.
A report can be defined as a testimonial or account of some happening. Reports are produced for specific purposes and it is essential that they deliver what is required in order to meet their defined objective(s). A poor report can lead to a project not being taken forward. I specialise in environmental reports – I have a Masters degree in Environmental Impact Assessment – but am able to undertake work on any aspect of report writing. I will take the data supplied by yourself and produce a report e.g. a bat report for submission to local authority planning departments or other body as required.
My hourly rate for report writing is £20. Discounts are available for large projects and for regular work.
Transcription involves listening to a recording and typing the contents up into a document for a client in order to provide them with a written record of what’s on the recording. This could be an interview, a lecture, a talk, a presentation or a meeting. I use Transcribe Software which enables me to make transcriptions accurately and efficiently. Any topic can be transcribed.
My rates for transcription are £1.50 per audio minute for up to two participants and £1.80 per audio minute for three to six participants. Rates for larger numbers may vary. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.
You will receive an invoice once work is complete and payment terms are thirty days. A deposit may be required for large documents or for work which will take longer than one month.
